I've been neck-deep in Path of Exile 2 lately, and with the 0.5.0 endgame update hanging over us, I keep telling myself "one more map" and meaning it. I'll even catch myself browsing stuff like PoE 2 Currency between runs, not because I'm trying to min-max every second, but because the game has me thinking about it when I'm not playing. My Druid's turned into this oddball cold-flinging shapeshifter that can shred bosses, and that's the hook: when it clicks, it really clicks.
Where The Fun Slips
The part that's grinding me down isn't difficulty, it's the XP loss on death. On paper, sure, it's classic PoE. Learn the mechanics, build properly, don't stand in bad stuff. In practice, it's often not "bad stuff" you can even see. A poison puddle hidden under three layers of spell effects. A detonation from somewhere off-screen. A lag hitch right as you're dodging. Then you hit "Restart at Checkpoint" and you already know what happened: your bar just got yanked backwards.
Endgame XP Feels Like A Dare
At this stage, XP gain isn't a steady climb, it's a slow drip that asks you to be perfect for long stretches. That's the real problem. You can be playing well, awake, locked in, and still get clipped once. And that one death doesn't just punish the mistake, it wipes out the last chunk of time. When you're hovering near the next level, it changes how you play. You stop taking fun risks. You back off content you actually enjoy. You start staring at the XP bar more than the fight.
Mitigation Exists, But It's Not Really There
People will say, "Use Omens," and yeah, that's fair advice—if you're actually seeing them. I'm not. Dozens of hours, and it's basically been a rumour. So the system ends up feeling like a tax you can't reliably budget for. If GGG wants death to matter, cool. Make the penalty something you can plan around, earn back, or soften with consistent options. Right now it's more like you're renting progress, and the landlord shows up whenever the server or your GPU sneezes.
What I'd Love To See Before 0.5.0
I'm not asking for free levels or Diablo-style speed. I just want the game to respect the time it demands. Let deaths hurt without deleting forty minutes because you missed a faint ground effect. Give us clearer telegraphs, or a smaller XP hit that scales with level, or a limited "grace" that you recharge by playing well. Anything that keeps the tension but drops the spite. I'm going to keep mapping either way, but I'd enjoy the climb a lot more if the next patch made progress feel earned instead of borrowed, even when I'm chasing that elusive poe2 mirror in the background of my grind.
