What actually changes when Return of the Ancients goes live?
Path of Exile 2's 0.5.0 update, Return of the Ancients, feels less like a tidy patch and more like a fresh starting line. The Runes of Aldur League brings a new economy, new crafting hooks, and enough Atlas changes that even regular players will need a minute to reset their habits. If you're planning a league start, it's worth thinking early about gear flow, trading, and PoE2 Currency because the new Remnant system will push players into crafting decisions almost from the beginning.
How does the Runes of Aldur mechanic work in normal play?
You'll find Remnants in league areas, then socket Runeshapes into their slots to build a recipe. It's not free loot, though. Once the recipe is set, the Remnant raises waves of monsters, and you've got to clear them before taking the crafted item. More Runeshapes means more waves and nastier modifiers. That's the hook. You gamble for a better result, then prove your build can handle the mess you just created.
Why are players talking so much about Runic Ward?
Runic Ward is probably the most interesting defensive idea in this update. It kicks in when your character drops to 1 life, letting the ward absorb damage while it lasts. It also regenerates on its own, which gives it a very different feel from life or energy shield. Early armour can gain Runic Ward with no real downside, while higher-level armour gives up some base defences for it. That trade-off will matter. Some builds will love the safety net. Others may decide raw armour, evasion, or energy shield still feels cleaner.
Is the endgame really different, or just rearranged?
It sounds genuinely different. The Atlas gets fixed points of interest, clearer routes, and a new Origins of Divinity storyline. Fortresses now matter because their maps award Atlas Passive Tree points, replacing the older progression method. The tree itself grows to more than 300 nodes, and players can eventually fill it out completely. That's a big change. It removes some of the old respec pressure and lets people focus more on which content they want to run right now, not what they're locked into forever.
What should returning players watch before jumping in?
Old Early Access characters aren't deleted, and a free passive tree refund helps soften the blow from all the balance changes. Still, most players will probably roll in Runes of Aldur for the clean economy and the proper league experience. Expect new Ascendancies, Kalguuran skills, reworked Breach, Delirium, Ritual, and core Fate of the Vaal content to pull builds in strange directions at first. Loot filters, trade quick-search, stash support, and build guide files should make the launch smoother, but early prices will move fast, so checking tools and comparing cheap poe2 currency options before heavy crafting can save a lot of frustration later.
